Women’s Basketball Travels To Georgia Southern
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fresh off of a victory over local Southern Conference rival Elon, the UNCG women’s basketball team looks to even its league record when the Spartans travel to Georgia Southern Saturday, Jan. 11. Tipoff from Hanner Fieldhouse is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
The win over the Phoenix was UNCG’s first SoCon victory of the season after losses to Chattanooga and Samford. The Blue and Gold is 1-3 on the road this campaign with a victory over Norfolk State and setbacks to Gardner-Webb, Fordham and nationally-ranked Florida State. The Eagles are 2-3 at home this season with wins over Jacksonville State and Wofford as well as losses to Cal State Northridge, Furman and George Mason. Georgia Southern won both meetings with UNCG last season, downing the Spartans 63-56 in Greensboro and 67-53 in Statesboro.
The Spartans enter the game with a 5-9 overall record and 1-2 SoCon ledger after defeating Elon 73-62 Jan. 4 at Fleming Gymnasium. The win snapped a six-game skid that dated back to Dec. 5, 2013. UNCG is averaging 63.9 points per game and allowing opponents to average 73.1 points per contest. The Blue and Gold owns a -2.6 margin on the glass, averaging 37.4 rebounds and allowing 40.0 boards per game. The Spartans are second in the SoCon in offensive rebounding at 14.1 per outing. In terms of shooting, UNCG is firing at a 36.4 percent clip from the field, 33.7 percent from beyond the arc and 69.3 percent from the free throw line.
Senior forward Janae’ Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) and sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) are tied for the team lead in scoring average at 12.7 - good for ninth in the SoCon - while Stevenson is pulling down a team-best 8.1 rebounds per game. She also has 47 offensive rebounds to her credit. Freshman center Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) is the team leader in blocked shots with 11. The Spartans use their bench liberally as 11 players have appeared in 12 or more games.
Georgia Southern is 4-11 overall and 2-2 in SoCon play after a 64-61 road win over Samford Monday. The Eagles are scoring 60.0 points per game and are allowing 70.3 to their opponents. On the glass, Georgia Southern is pulling down 39.1 rebounds per contest and owns a -2.2 margin - giving up 41.3 boards a game. The Eagles are shooting 36.2 percent from the field, 32.2 percent from three-point land and an impressive 74.1 percent at the free throw line. Anna Claire Knight is scoring a team-best 14.9 points per game and is coming off of a triple-double performance at Samford. Briana Jones leads the rebounding efforts with 8.5 boards per game.
UNCG leads the series by a 20-18 margin, but GSU has won four of the last five meetings. The Eagles are 11-5 against the Spartans in Statesboro.
Following its matchup at Georgia Southern, UNCG will have a quick turnaround as the Spartans head to Davidson Monday, Jan. 13, for a 7 p.m. tip at Belk Arena.
