Women’s Basketball Closes Non-Conference Slate In New York
THE BRONX, N.Y. – The UNCG women’s basketball team will close the book on its non-conference schedule Sunday and Monday, taking part in the Fordham Holiday Classic at Rose Hill Gymnasium in The Bronx, N.Y. The Spartans will take on host Fordham in the opener Sunday at 1 p.m. before facing either Harvard or Tulsa Monday.
UNCG looks to snap a four-game losing skid which includes the Blue and Gold’s first two conference games of the season. The Spartans have not played a true road contest since downing Norfolk State 73-66 back on Nov. 20. The Blue and Gold leads the all-time series between the schools 2-0 and UNCG owns a 1-0 mark all-time at Rose Hill Gymnasium - downing the Rams 69-63 on Dec. 12, 2010.
The Spartans enter the game with a 4-7 overall record after falling to St. Bonaventure 58-46 Dec. 22 at Fleming Gymnasium. The Blue and Gold put up 67 shots but hit just 19 of them to finish at 28.4 percent from the field. The Bonnies also made just 19 shots and ended up at 33.9 percent from the field after taking 56 attempts. St. Bonaventure won the rebounding battle 49-42 as the teams combined for 37 offensive boards. The Bonnies were 18-of-24 from the charity stripe for 75 percent while the Spartans were awarded just seven free throw attempts – hitting four.
Sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) went off for a season-high 21 points on 9-for-17 shooting and knocked down three shots from beyond the arc. Classmate and guard Jazmine Missouri (Kensington, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) netted 10 points for the second time this year. Hannah Little paced three SBU players in double figures with 21 points. Missouri and freshman forward India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) led UNCG with six rebounds each.
For the season, UNCG is shooting 35.6 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from beyond the arc and 67.9 percent at the charity stripe.
Fordham is on quite a hot streak as it prepares to host its Holiday Classic. The Rams have won eight games in a row to sit at 9-2 after beginning the season 1-2. Most recently, Fordham knocked off rival Manhattan 71-46 Dec. 21 in the Battle for the Bronx. Erin Rooney, a native of New Zealand, is the leader of the squad - pacing the Rams in scoring average (20.2 ppg) and rebounding average (8.4 rpg).
As a team, Fordham averages 69.6 points per game and 39.2 rebounds per contest. The Rams shoot 45.7 percent from the field, 39.3 from beyond the arc and 71.3 percent at the free throw line. Fordham is a perfect 5-0 at home this season.
UNCG returns home Saturday, Jan. 4, welcoming local Southern Conference rival Elon to Fleming Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
