GREENSBORO, N.C. – After 110 minutes of soccer couldn’t decide a winner, both teams went to penalty kicks as UNCG women’s soccer lost a heartbreaker to Wofford, 5-4, eliminating the Spartans in the Southern Conference quarterfinals Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

“We fought hard, it certainly wasn’t for lack of effort,” head coach Steve Nugent said. “It is a tough spot to be in as we were committed to doing something special this year. “Here we are at the end of the year scratching our heads as to why we are not moving forward. The only way you can solve that is to make sure that never happens again.”

The game ended in a 0-0 draw giving UNCG a final record of 10-6-4 on the season. The Terriers sit at 8-4-6 heading into the semifinals at their home field.

In the penalty kick shootout, both teams had chances to win as each team picked five shooters to begin. UNCG took a 4-3 lead after a Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) make. Lucy Etro made her penalty kick to even it at 4-4. After a UNCG miss, Faith Lifer stepped up and nailed the game-winning PK after 18 attempts from both teams sending Wofford into the semifinals.

In the second overtime, Wofford came alive taking six shots in the period, including a shot from Annika Jansson that hit the post.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) made three terrific saves to keep the Terriers off the board. In the 105th minute, Chloe Brackett blasted a shot from outside the box when Simmons touched it over the goal for the save.

In the first overtime, sophomore Tracy Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) put a shot on goal but Kara Boggs came away with the save. Boggs made a career-high 15 saves, coming just one save away from tying the school-record for most in a game.

Simmons finished the game with six saves, including two keys stops during penalty kicks. Simmons earned her career-best ninth shutout of the year.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first half as the Spartans controlled possession and outshot Wofford 10-3 but couldn’t find the back of the net.

A minute into the half, sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tennessee/Franklin) took a shot on frame but Boggs turned away the shot.

Wolf had a couple of opportunities getting out all alone against Boggs one-on-one in the 74th minute but Boggs made the save. In the 82nd minute, freshman Katelyn Mountjoy (Highland Village, Texas/Marcus) fired on goal but Boggs again was able to keep the Spartans scoreless.

Freshman Mackenzie Noel (Braddock Heights, Md./St. Johns College) finished the game with five shots, putting four on goal. White had four shots with three on goal and Wolf had all five attempts on goal.

The Spartans took 22 shots compared to just 14 for Wofford with six of them coming in the second overtime.

In the first half, the Spartans dominated play but came away tied with Wofford after taking 10 shots, including nine that went on frame.

UNCG came out attacking in the eighth minute when Noel took a shot from inside the box off a corner kick but Wofford keeper Kara Boggs made the save.

In the 28th minute, the Blue and Gold had another opportunity when White fired on goal but Boggs got a piece to keep it out of the net. Noel found the rebound and her attempt was cleared off the line by the Wofford defense.

The best scoring chance of the half for UNCG came in the 31st minute after a nice long ball from freshman Nicole Epstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) found junior Ashley Stokes (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) who crossed into the box where Fishman put a header on goal but Boggs  punched it out.
