STATESBORO, Ga. – Sarah Folwell had season highs of 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench and Breonna Patterson added 11 points, but UNCG shot just 34.6 percent from the floor Monday night in falling to Georgia Southern, 59-47, at Hanner Fieldhouse.
The Spartans (4-23, 3-16 Southern Conference) were cold from the field all night, shooting just 8-for-22 (36.4 percent) in the first half and 10-for-33 (33.3 percent) in the second.
Georgia Southern (8-19, 4-14 SoCon) shot 41.5 percent from the floor (22-for-53) on the night to snap its six-game losing streak.
"Tonight, we had trouble scoring," UNCG coach Wendy Palmer said. "And then we were not able to defend. Georgia Southern played with a lot of energy, it was Senior Night for them. They came out on fire and knocked down some 3s early on, and we could never come back from that."
GSU's Meredyth Frye had a game-high 17 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Seniors Janay Wilson and Samantha Williams had 13 and 12 points, respectively, as they celebrated their Senior Night.
The game was a close one early, and a Patterson 3-pointer and a pair of Natalie Headley free throws briefly put UNCG on top at 17-16. The Lady Eagles quickly answered on the other end, however, with Wilson hitting a 3-pointer to put GSU ahead to stay.
The Lady Eagles would finish the half on an 18-6 run to blow the game open, getting a pair of triples from Williams and a conventional three-point play from Frye in the run.
GSU would pull away early in the second frame before UNCG made a game of it late. After trailing by as many as 19 in the stanza, the Spartans would claw back into it.
Georgia Southern took a 51-35 lead on a MiMi DuBose 3-pointer with 6:06 to go, but Folwell hit the first of her two 3-pointers to start an 8-2 run. Wilson hit a jumper on the other end, but an April Carson jumper and another Folwell 3 got the Spartans back within 10 for the first time since just before halftime.
With just over two minutes to play, there was still time for a comeback, but both teams came up empty on their next possessions. With the Lady Eagles burning clock on each possession, UNCG was forced to foul to stop the clock.
GSU didn't miss from the free throw line down the stretch, going 6-for-6 in the final 36 seconds to close out the game.
The Spartans could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
UNCG wraps up the regular season on Monday, Feb. 27 when it will host Wofford at Fleming Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The Spartans will honor seniors Folwell, Amy Clapper and Jazz Weaver prior to the contest.
