BOONE, N.C. – Senior Jazz Weaver matched her career high with 13 points and UNCG put two in double figures for the first time in eight games, but the Spartans fell at Southern Conference-leading Appalachian State on Saturday, 79-60 at the Holmes Center in the Mountaineers' Play 4Kay game for breast cancer awareness.
Natalie Headley joined Weaver in double figures with 10 for the Spartans (3-21, 2-14 SoCon). Sidnei Harmon and Breonna Patterson just missed double digits themselves with nine points each. Janae' Stevenson just missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
Courtney Freeman scored a game-high 19 points for App State (20-3, 14-1 SoCon), which also got 18 points and 10 rebounds from Anna Freeman and 14 points from Maryah Sydnor.
After a lackluster first half, UNCG seemed to put it together in the second half, matching the Mountaineers nearly point for point. The Spartans trailed 40-24 at the break but were outscored by just three points in the second frame.
"Appalachian State came out and played really hard, and that's why they are leading the conference," UNCG coach Wendy Palmer said. "They're a very good team, solid at all positions. Our young ladies worked hard today in key areas and certain things we focused on. Jazz had a good game and was 8-for-8 from the free throw line and was attacking. So, I did see some good things from our squad. We're just going to keep working."
The Mountaineers bolted out to a 13-2 lead on the strength of five early points from Sidnor, but the Spartans would close the gap with an 8-2 run of their own to get back within five points at 15-10 with 11:36 left in the first half. Freshman Jarae Savage had back-to-back baskets to cap the run.
A Courtney Freeman layup and an Anna Freeman 3-pointer would put the Apps back up by double digits to stay, as Courtney Freeman's basket kicked off a 17-4 that swung momentum back in the Mountaineers' favor. ASU would lead by as many as 21 in the first half but a Dayshaun Richbow three-point play and a pair of Weaver free throws to end the half pulled the Spartans back within 16.
The Apps scored the first two buckets of the second half to push their lead to 20 points, and the teams traded baskets for the next several minutes before a Patterson 3-pointer and a Headley layup pulled UNCG within 15 points at 50-35 with 15:01 to play.
A 10-2 App run – capped by Anna Freeman's second 3-pointer of the game – put ASU back up by 23. The Mountaineers' lead would not dip below 16 the rest of the way.
Weaver scored nine of her points in the second half, with six of them coming from the free throw line. Overall, she was a career-best 8-for-8 from the line on the day.
UNCG excelled from the free throw line as a team, as well, shooting 81 percent from the stripe (17-for-21), its second-best mark of the season.
App State shot 51.7 percent from the floor (30-for-58) in winning its ninth straight game.
The Spartans will host Davidson on Tuesday for their fifth game in 11 days and second against the Wildcats in a week. The contest will be broadcast on ESPN3 and is set for a 7 p.m. start at Fleming Gymnasium.
