DAVIDSON, N.C. – UNCG's women's basketball team dropped a 71-52 decision at Davidson in Southern Conference action Wednesday.
Dayshaun Richbow scored a team-best 13 points off the bench for the Spartans (3-20, 2-13 SoCon), while Sarah Folwell and Janae' Stevenson had nine each.
Laura Murray scored a game-best 20 points for Davidson (16-7, 12-2 SoCon), which also got 16 points and eight rebounds from Sophia Aleksandravicius. Murray matched her season high with six 3-pointers, going 6-for-8 from beyond the arc.
Davidson was in control from the outset, with Murray corralling the opening tip and racing in for the layup in the first two seconds of the game. An Aleksandravicius layup and a Murray 3-pointer gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.
UNCG got back within a possession on baskets from Stevenson and Jarae Savage, but Davidson turned in a 15-3 run over the next eight minutes to put the lead into double digits, with another Murray 3 capping the run. Murray was 4-for-5 from long range in the first half.
The Wildcats would push their lead to as many as 18 at 31-13 in the opening frame, but UNCG turned in a 9-2 run to get back within shouting distance just before the half, with Stevenson scoring four points in the spurt. UNCG trailed 35-22 at the break.
Davidson put the game out of reach early in the second half, opening the stanza on a 20-2 run and holding UNCG to just one field goal in the first 7:24. A Folwell 3 slowed the Wildcat's run momentarily, but Davidson continued to pour it on and went up by 36 at 67-31 with 6:41 to play.
UNCG finally got its offense going after that, outscoring Davidson 21-4 the rest of the way. Richbow and Folwell scored most of the their points in the closing minutes, with Folwell hitting a pair of 3-pointers and Richbow scoring seven of her points in the last 3:19, including a three-point play with 11 seconds left.
While the Spartans shot just 26.8 percent from the floor on the evening (19-for-71), UNCG was a season-best 10-for-11 from the free throw line (90.9 percent).
UNCG also had just seven turnovers, a season low.
"We definitely got better on the free throw line tonight," UNCG coach Wendy Palmer said. "That has been one of our focuses in practice, and tonight it was great to see that it paid off. However, we're not doing the little things to get us in position to win games. Davidson played a great game tonight. They have some very skilled players that play hard all the time."
Richbow had a solid all-around game with five rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal to go with her season-high 13 points. She was 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Folwell hit three 3s on the night, matching her career high.
Natalie Headley and Nneka Awuruonye had six points and six rebounds each.
UNCG returns to action Saturday at Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. That contest is set for a 4:30 p.m. tip.
