GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) has been named the Southern Conference Student Athlete of the Week, according to an announcement Wednesday by the league. The selection marks the first such honor of her career.

Mason, the reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year and preseason all-conference honoree, has a 3.92 grade point average and is a double major in African American studies and economics.

Mason averaged 13.5 points per game for the Spartans last week, including a 17-point effort in UNCG’s 81-76 victory over High Point. She shot 50 percent from behind the arc and hit 10-of-11 attempts from the free-throw line in two games. Mason is averaging a team second-best 13.1 points as well as 2.6 rebounds per game for the Blue and Gold this season. She has scored in double figures in all but one of UNCG’s seven games.

The Spartans continue a seven-game homestand tomorrow night, hosting Atlantic Coast Conference member Clemson. Tipoff from Fleming Gymnasium is scheduled for 7 p.m. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive free pizza as well as a voucher for a UNCG pint glass redeemable at the end of the contest.
