Men's Basketball Soars Over Ferrum College, 95-43
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Twelve different Spartans found their way onto the score sheet Friday night as the UNCG men’s basketball team posted a dominant 95-43 victory over NCAA Division III Ferrum College on campus at Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans return to action Monday night in their Greensboro Coliseum opener hosting Delaware in the second game of the UNCG Spartan Classic at 7 p.m.
The 52-point victory ties the largest margin of victory for the Spartans in their 26-year history as an NCAA Division I program, matching the mark set last year against Mars Hill. It is also the third-largest margin of victory in the program’s 51-year history, falling short of two victories over Piedmont Bible in 1985 (66) and 1983 (60).
UNCG (2-1) connected on 55.6 percent (35-of-63) from the field and 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from 3-point land in the victory. The Spartans dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Panthers by a 44-22 margin and also out-scored Ferrum in the paint 50-16. UNCG also held Ferrum to just 32.0 percent (16-of-50) shooting from the field and 25 percent (6-of-24) from deep.
Freshman guard Isaiah Miller (Covington, Ga./Newton) led the way with a career-high 19 points off the bench in just 17 minutes of action. Miller connected on 8-of-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. He also grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists and recorded four steals in the victory.
Senior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) scored 15 points in 19 minutes while grabbing six rebounds. Smith connected on 5-of-10 from the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point land. Junior guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) added 13 points in 21 minutes, including hitting three 3-pointers on the night.
Redshirt freshman guard Kylia Sykes (Washington, D.C./St. John’s College) scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field off the bench. Sophomore forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) added eight points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals in 22 minutes of play.
Both teams started slowly with the Spartans hold a 12-11 edge at the 11:41 mark. UNCG broke open the game with a 27-0 run to take a commanding 39-11 lead at the 4:41 mark. The Spartans caught fire from outside, hitting 7-of-8 during the run from six different players. Sophomore Kyrin Galloway (Milton, Ga./Milton) started the barrage from deep while Smith hit two late in the run to lead the way with six points during the stretch.
The Spartans continued to pour it on as it opened the second half with a 20-0 run to take a 69-24 led with 12:49 remaining. Junior Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) got things going with a 3-pointer before Alonso hit two from deep. Dickey scored four points in the paint while Miller capped the run with a dunk after forcing a Ferrum turnover.
The Spartans posted their third large run of the night, notching an 18-0 spurt to extend the lead to a game-high 58 points at 91-33. Miller was the offensive force, scoring the first six points and pouring in 10 points during the surge. He notched all four of his steals during the run and had three dunks in the stretch.
