The UNCG softball team stormed back twice and held on to defeat Georgia Southern in the series finale, 11-10, Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

Softball Takes Wild Finale against Georgia Southern, 11-10

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team stormed back twice and held on to defeat Georgia Southern in the series finale, 11-10, Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium. Heavy rain forced the seventh inning to be called giving UNCG the victory.

The Spartans improve to 11-12, 1-2 in conference play while the Eagles are 18-8, 2-1.

In a drama filled finale where both teams were exchanging leads the Spartans came out on top proving the last blow in the series finale.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, UNCG was trailing 10-8 when senior Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison) launched an opposite field three-run home run to put the Spartans ahead for good at 11-10.

Sophomore Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) earned the victory in relief to improve to 3-5 on the season. Allie Miles fell to 0-1 after allowing the game-winning three run home run.

The Spartans needed all 12 hits as senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Juniors Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) and Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) each had two hits. Madruga had two RBI and a runs scored in the victory.

Georgia Southern jumped on top in the second inning after Kaitlyn Johnson blasted a solo home run to left field to make it 1-0.

The Eagles made it 4-0 after a three run four inning on one hit. Johnson singled up the middle to start the frame. A.J Hamilton was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. After a fielder’s choice, Breanna McLendon hit a ground ball to Madruga who threw home and Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) made the tag but the runner was called safe giving Georgia Southern a 2-0 lead. Back-to-back walks forced in another run for the Eagles. Shelby Morrill drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly.

UNCG stormed back with an eight run fourth inning capped off by a two-run home run from Nicole Thomas off reigning SoCon pitcher of the month Sarah Purvis. Nicole Thomas started the rally with a leadoff walk. After an out, Lindsay Thomas singled to right field to put runners on first and second. MacReynolds reached on a fielding error to load the bases. After a fielder’s choice, Madruga lined a two-run single to make it 4-2 Georgia Southern. Sophomore Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) singled to load the bases for UNCG. Sarah Purvis came on in relief and was called for an illegal pitch allowing a run to score making it 4-3 Georgia Southern. Sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) singled to tie the game at 4-4. Bedwell roped a two-run single to give UNCG a 6-4 lead. Nicole Thomas completed the inning with her team-leading sixth home run of the season.

Georgia Southern would not go away scoring a six-run sixth inning to retake a 10-9 lead. The Eagles quickly cut the lead to 8-7 after Emily Snider blasted a three-run home run to right field with no outs. Georgia Southern would complete the comeback after AJ Hamilton lined a two-run double to the right centerfield wall to plate two more runs. The tenth run for the Eagles would come home on a wild pitch to make it 10-8 Georgia Southern.

Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) started for UNCG and went five innings giving up seven earned runs on six hits.

The Blue and Gold return to action against ACC foe North Carolina Wednesday, Mar. 19 with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
