GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Southern Conference announced its postseason awards Tuesday and guard Tevon Saddler (Aberdeen, Md./St. Frances Academy) was named the league’s Freshman of the Year, while junior forward Kyle Cain (Chicago, Ill./Arizona State) was named to the 10-member All-Southern Conference Team by the 11 league head coaches. Additionally, Saddler was named to the All-Freshman team by both the coaches and the SoCon Sports Media Association.

Saddler becomes the first Spartan to win Freshman of the Year honors since Kyle Hines took home the award in 2005. He tied for the lead in scoring among all freshman, averaging 12.4 points per game while also grabbing 3.8 rebounds per game. He also was 11th overall in the league with 3.0 assists per game and his 1.3 steals per game led all league rookies. Saddler finished second in the league in both free throws made (140) and attempted (210).

Saddler was named the SoCon CRONS Freshman of the Week a league-best five times this year. He scored in double figures on 20 different occasions, including three games of at least 20 points. He was consistent throughout the year, averaging 12.5 points per league game this season and 2.7 assists per game. He scored a career-high 34 points against East Carolina this year, the highest point total among all freshmen in the league. His 371 points scored this season ranks third all-time in UNCG history among freshmen,

Cain was named to the All-SoCon First Team by the league’s coaches and earned Second Team honors by the league’s media association. He led the team and ranks ninth in the league in scoring this year at 15.3 points per game. He also leads the team and is second in the SoCon on the glass, grabbing 9.0 rebounds per game.

Cain, a transfer from Arizona State in his first year of eligibility at UNCG, scored in double figures 27 times this season, including eight games with 20 or more points. He posted a team-high 11 double-doubles on the year, which ranked second in the league just behind Z. Mason of Chattanooga (13). He connected on 47.4 percent (192-of-405) from the field this season and hit 71.9 percent (82-of-114) from the free throw line. In league play, he averaged 14.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

Saddler and Cain helped the Spartans earn the sixth seed in the upcoming 2014 SoCon Tournament in Asheville. The Spartans will open play Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when they face off against 11th-seeded The Citadel at the U.S. Cellular Center.
