Menís Hoops Travels To Wofford For Regular Season Finale Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team wraps up the 2013-14 regular season Saturday night as the Spartans travel down to Spartanburg, S.C., for a meeting against Wofford. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The game will be broadcast on 1320 WCOG AM and online at www.uncgspartans.com with Cabell Philpott and Darryl Kosciak providing the call. Additionally, the game will be video streamed via Wofford for a fee of $5.95.

The Spartans enter Saturday’s game with their SoCon Tournament seeding still up in the air. UNCG can be seeded anywhere from No. 6-8 depending on the outcome of its game and the rest of the league slate Saturday. If the Spartans win at Wofford, they will claim the sixth seed. A loss will see their seeding depend on the outcomes of Georgia Southern/The Citadel, Western Carolina/Samford and Appalachian State/Chattanooga.

UNCG enters Saturday’s game with a 13-17 overall record and a 6-9 mark in Southern Conference play. The Spartans’ own a 3-8 record on the road this season and just a 2-5 mark in SoCon play with their wins coming at Georgia Southern and Appalachian State.

Junior forward Kyle Cain (Chicago, Ill./Arizona State) leads the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game and on the glass at 9.0 rebounds per game. Cain is currently ninth in the league in scoring and second on the glass. He has scored in double figures in 26 of 30 games this season but is coming off only eight points at Davidson. Freshman guard Tevon Saddler (Aberdeen, Md./St. Frances Academy) is second on the team in scoring at 12.3 points per game. Saddler ranks second among all league freshmen in scoring. He also leads the team with 86 assists, 38 steals, 14 blocked shots, 136 free throws made and 204 free throws attempted.

Sophomore forwardKayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) rounds out the Spartans in double figures scoring at 11.4 points per game. Locke also grabs 4.4 rebounds per game and as gone to the free throw line 129 times this year. Redshirt freshman center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) adds 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game off the bench this season. Since February, White is averaging 10.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.

Wofford enters Saturday’s game with a 17-11 overall record and an 11-4 mark in Southern Conference play. The Terriers are tied for second place in the league with Elon and Chattanooga while sitting a game in front of Western Carolina. Wofford is still battling for its seeding in the SoCon Tournament as well but has already secured a bye in the first round. The Terriers are coming off a 64-59 victory at Elon Thursday night. Wofford has won 10 of its last 11 games with its lone loss coming at Davidson 59-49.

The Terriers boast the league’s best defense, holding opponents to just 63.0 points per game. Karl Cochran leads Wofford in scoring at 15.4 points per game and has hit a team-high 64 three-pointers. Cochran is second on the team at 4.9 rebounds per game and leads the team with 84 assists and 47 steals. Spencer Collins is second in scoring at 13.3 points per game and has gone to the free throw line a team-high 122 times. Lee Skinner rounds out the Terriers in double figures scoring at 11.3 points per game and also leads the team on the glass with 8.6 caroms per game.

Saturday’s game marks the 32nd meeting all-time between UNCG and Wofford, dating back to the first meeting Nov. 30, 1985. The Spartans trail the all-time series by a 10-21 margin and have dropped 10 out of the last 11 meetings to the Terriers.

Last season, UNCG posted a regular season series split as the Spartans posted a 71-52 victory at the Greensboro Coliseum before falling 59-50 in Spartanburg. Former Spartans Trevis Simpson and Derrell Armstrong led the way against Wofford. Simpson averaged 17.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in the two meetings while Armstrong added 12.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Collins led Wofford against UNCG, averaging 16.0 points per game, while Cochran chipped in 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in the regular season series split.
