Menís Hoops Travels To Georgia Southern Thursday (Updated)
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s basketball team returns to action Wednesday night as the Spartans travel to Statesboro, Ga., to face off against Georgia Southern in a crucial Southern Conference matchup. The game will be radio broadcast on 1320 WCOG AM and online at www.uncgspartans.com with Scott Pryzwansky providing the call. Additionally, the game will be video streamed online by Georgia Southern for a fee of $5.95.
Both teams enter Wednesday’s contest with identical 11-14 overall records and 4-6 mark in league play as they are tied for seventh in the league. The Spartans have dropped five out of their last six games, including all three on the road during that streak. UNCG is just 2-7 on the road this season with its two victories coming at Virginia Tech and Appalachian State.
Junior forward Kyle Cain (Chicago, Ill./Arizona State) leads the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in 23 out of 25 games this year. Cain also leads the team on the glass, grabbing 9.1 rebounds per game, including 163 on the defensive glass, which leads the SoCon. He is shooting 48.6 percent (161-of-331) from the field and is making 50.3 percent of his two-point shots.
Freshman guard Tevon Saddler (Aberdeen, Md./St. Frances Academy) is second on the team in scoring at 12.7 points per game. Saddler leads the team with 74 assists, 32 steals and 181 free throw attempts. Sophomore forward Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) adds 12.0 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per contest. Locke has gone to the free throw line 115 times this season.
Junior Nicholas Paulos (Salt Lake City, Utah/New Hampton School) adds 9.5 points per game and has hit a team-high 63 three-pointers. Redshirt freshman center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) is second on the team on the glass, grabbing 4.8 rebounds per game while adding 4.8 points per game.
Georgia Southern has dropped two straight and five out of their last seven games, including losses at Wofford and Elon most recently. The Eagles are 7-3 at home this season with wins over Columbia International, Toccoa Falls, Brewton-Parker, Kennesaw State, Samford, Furman and The Citadel.
Jelani Hewitt leads the team and the SoCon in scoring at 20.4 points per game. Hewitt has hit 42 percent (160-of-381) from the field, 36.5 percent (66-of-181) from three-point land and 83.9 percent (125-of-149) from the free throw line this season. He also leads the team with 84 assists and 53 steals while grabbing 4.6 rebounds per game.
Tre Bussey is second on the team in scoring at 15.9 points per game, while also adding 4.2 rebounds per contest. Bussey is shooting 39.3 percent (46-of-117) from three-point land. Kyle Doyle leads the team on the glass with 5.6 rebounds per game while Marvin Baynham is second at 4.9 caroms per contest.
Wednesday’s game marks the 24th meeting all-time between UNCG and Georgia Southern. The Spartans hold a slim 12-11 advantage in the series but have lost three straight games to the Eagles. Last season, UNCG dropped a 66-60 decision to Georgia Southern at the Greensboro Coliseum and earlier this year the Spartans fell 64-62, also at the Greensboro Coliseum
In that game, there were 16 lead changes and six tie scores as UNCG had two looks for the game-tying basket in the final minute of play. The Spartans connected on 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the field and hit 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from three-point land in the loss. UNCG was hurt on the glass, losing the rebounding battle by a 39-28 margin, including 16 offensive rebounds for Georgia Southern, which led to 16 second-chance points.
Sophomore guard Jordan Potts (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) led the team in scoring, notching 13 points off the bench. Potts connected on 4-of-7 from the field, including three three-pointers. Cain added 11 points and eight rebounds while White chipped in 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Hewitt led Georgia Southern with 23 points while Doyle added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
