Craig Fink is in his fifth year as the associate athletics director for advancement at UNCG in 2015-16. He is tasked with raising money for the UNCG athletic department through private contributions and oversees all of the department’s fundraising activities.
Fink turned in a highly successful first year at UNCG as under his direction the Spartan Club exceeded its $300,000 annual scholarship fund goal for the 2012 fiscal year and set a new all-time record for the fund. The Spartan Club, the official fundraising organization for UNCG athletics posted the annual scholarship fund total of $307,479, a 20.7% increase over last year’s total, increasing their efforts by over $50,000.
In 2012-13, the Spartan Club surpassed its annual scholarship fund goal of $340,000 for the 2013 fiscal year and set a new all-time record for the scholarship fund. The Spartan Club posted an annual scholarship fund total of $342,421, an 11% increase over last year’s total. Overall, the Spartan Club raised $599,317, which is the second highest total all-time and a 26% increase over last season’s total.
Fink comes to UNCG after five years at Eastern Michigan University, the last four of which were spent as the associate athletics director for development and executive director of the EMU Athletic Club. At EMU, Fink directed the athletic fundraising operation through the most successful four-year stretch in school history, breaking the record for single-year cash and gifts-in-kind two years in a row. He was also instrumental in helping secure the first $1 million gift commitment in EMU’s athletic history – and at the time one of just 10 in university history – and another gift of more than $900,000. Fink also led fundraising efforts for several six-figure facility projects at EMU.
Prior to his work at EMU, Fink spent five years at the Brown University Sports Foundation. After four years there as the associate director, he was elevated to interim executive director and then senior associate director. Fink’s work at Brown saw him personally soliciting gifts of five and six figures, as well as being part of the senior management team that put together a strategy to raise $125 million for athletics as part of the $1.4 billion Boldly Brown: Campaign for Academic Enrichment.
Before a brief stint as a sales manager at zUniversity, a university-branded affinity marketing company, Fink spent four years (1996-2000) working at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He served in several roles there, the last of which was as manager of events and group programs, and developed strategies for and managed all marketing-driven special events, including Enshrinement Weekend. He was a public relations supervisor for the Hall in the early part of his tenure.
Fink got his start in collegiate athletics working in the sports information department at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. After a year as an assistant director, he was promoted to director and also served as an assistant baseball coach.
Fink earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts in 1994 and a professional master’s in business administration from UMass in 2000.
Craig and his wife Kim live in Greensboro with their two sons Jack (12) and Alex (10).
