Men's Basketball Set For August Foreign Tour 05-22-2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's basketball team will get an early jump on the 2013-14 season with a foreign tour that will see the Spartans play up to five games against outside competition and visit three Spanish cities in Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona.

The Spartans will get 10 practices to prepare for the foreign tour, which will take place August 8-17. Game dates, opponents and a full itinerary are still being finalized. All returning student-athletes and incoming freshmen who have completed at least three summer credits will be eligible to play in the foreign tour.

"This will be a tremendous experience for our team," head coach Wes Miller said. "It is a great opportunity for our players to bond on and off the court, which will help unite our returning players with our large group of incoming freshmen. This trip is also a terrific cultural and educational opportunity that many of our players may not otherwise ever experience"

UNCG is tentatively scheduled to spend three days in the Spanish capital city of Madrid, which is the third largest city in the European Union, while playing a pair of games. The Spartans will then travel to Zaragoza to play a single game before finishing off the trip with a pair of games in the Mediterranean coast city of Barcelona, the home of the 1992 Summer Olympics.

"Having the ability for this team to gain 10 additional practice days and play five games together over the summer will be a great benefit for our program," Miller said. "The additional time on and off the court will bring this group together and will give us a jump start on what we believe will be an exciting year."

Among the returning letterwinners leading the Spartans to Spain will be junior Nicholas Paulos (Salt Lake City, Utah/New Hampton School), sophomore Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonough), senior guard Drew Parker (Houston, Texas/La Porte) and sophomore Jordan Potts (Columbus, Ohio/Northland).

Additionally, redshirt freshman center RJ White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) returns after suffering a season-ending injury after just seven games last year.

Redshirt junior forward Kyle Cain (Chicago, Ill./Arizona State) will be eligible to make his first appearance in a Spartan uniform during the foreign tour. Cain had to sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules after earning two letters at Arizona State.

This marks the first time UNCG men's basketball has made a foreign tour since prior to the 2007-08 season when the Spartans traveled to Italy for three games.
