Both squads enter the contest having lost league series over the weekend to close the regular season. UNCG (21-27) was swept by tournament host The Citadel at Riley Park while Furman (23-31) dropped two of three to Appalachian State in Boone.
The pitching matchup will see Spartan junior RHP Max Povse (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) toe the rubber against Paladin senior RHP Jacques de Gruy. Povse is 6-4 overall with a 5.10 earned run average while de Gruy owns a 4-3 record and 4.60 ERA.
UNCG finished as the top hitting team in the SoCon for the second-straight season, hitting .309 currently with junior second baseman and first-team all-conference selection Hunter King (Mason City, Iowa/Northern Iowa Area CC) leading the way at .373. The Spartans have five hitters batting .309 or better and eight at .277 or higher.
Senior Hunter Burton paces the Furman offense with a .336 batting average and was named to the All-Southern Conference First Team by the league’s coaches. The Paladins sport a .289 team average while the pitching staff sports a collective 5.53 ERA.
Furman owns a 32-29 advantage in the overall series between the programs and a 5-2 lead in SoCon Tournament meetings. However, UNCG took two of three from the Paladins in Greensboro earlier this season, sweeping a doubleheader March 22 by scores of 14-8 and 8-6.
The winner of Tuesday’s play-in game will meet No. 1 seed and regular season champion Western Carolina in the main double-elimination portion of the tournament bracket Wednesday at 1 p.m.
