Baseball Wraps Up Regular Season At The Citadel
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team wraps up the regular season this weekend with a three-game Southern Conference series at The Citadel. The games will be played at Riley Park - the site of this season’s SoCon Baseball Championship. The series begins Thursday at 4 p.m., continues Friday at 4 p.m. and closes at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Live stats and a live video feed for all three contests are available courtesy of The Citadel athletics department.
UNCG resides in ninth place in the league standings but has a chance to finish sixth with a sweep of the Bulldogs and some outside help.
The Spartans look to snap a skid that reached four games last weekend as Wofford swept the Blue and Gold in Spartanburg. Last season, UNCG took two of three from the Bulldogs in Greensboro, winning the last two games of the series after dropping the opener.
The Citadel leads the all-time series between the schools by a 32-25 count and has won five of the last six meetings at Riley Park.
The Spartans enter the weekend at 21-24 overall and 8-13 in the Southern Conference. UNCG has had three conference games cancelled due to inclement weather. The Blue and Gold is the top hitting team in the SoCon with a .307 batting average - good for 11th in the nation. UNCG has six players batting .311 or higher.
In terms of pitching, the Spartans own a 4.81 team earned run average. Sophomore RHP Ryan Clark (3-5, 3.41) will take the mound for the series opener while junior RHP Max Povse (6-4, 5.12) and senior RHP Dylan Thompson (2-4, 5.66) will pitch Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The Bulldogs are 20-32 and 5-18 in Southern Conference play coming into the weekend. The Citadel dropped a midweek contest to nationally-ranked South Carolina Tuesday after dropping two of three to UNC Wilmington last weekend in non-conference action. As a team, The Citadel is hitting .267 - eighth in the SoCon - and is led by Drew DeKerlegand’s .333 mark.
The pitching staff sports a 5.66 ERA while opposing batters are hitting .285 off the Bulldogs. LHP Logan Cribb (4-4, 4.29) will toe the rubber in the series opener, followed by RHP Austin Mason (1-4, 4.86) Friday and RHP Austin Livingston (2-7, 7.95) Saturday.
Following the series with The Citadel, UNCG will remain in Charleston for the 2014 Southern Conference Baseball Championship held at Riley Park.
