Baseball Entertains Samford In Final Home Weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team closes out its home schedule this weekend, welcoming Samford to Greensboro for a three-game Southern Conference series. The set begins Friday at 6 p.m., continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m.
Live stats and a video stream of all three contests are available free of charge courtesy of the UNCG athletics department.
The Spartans will celebrate Senior Day prior to Saturday’s game with the Bulldogs with the recognition ceremony beginning at 1:45 p.m. on the field.
UNCG looks to continue its climb up the league standings as the Blue and Gold swept a series from Elon last weekend in Greensboro. It marked the first three-game SoCon sweep for the Spartans since the 2011 campaign when UNCG swept four conference opponents. Samford leads the all-time series between the programs 10-5, but the Spartans won two of three at Joe Lee Griffin Field in Birmingham last season.
The Spartans enter the weekend at 20-19 overall and 7-8 in the Southern Conference. UNCG has had three conference games cancelled due to inclement weather but sits within striking distance of a top-three spot in the league standings. The Blue and Gold is the top hitting team in the SoCon with a .310 batting average - good for eighth in the nation. UNCG has seven players batting .301 or higher.
In terms of pitching, the Spartans own a 4.49 team earned run average while the staff has limited opposing batters to a .231 average the last nine contests. Sophomore RHP Ryan Clark (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) will take the mound for the series opener while junior RHP Max Povse (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) and senior RHP Dylan Thompson (Snow Camp, N.C./Guilford Technical CC) will pitch Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Clark picked up a win against Samford in the middle game of last season’s series.
The Bulldogs are 26-19 and 10-8 in Southern Conference play coming into the weekend. Samford hosted No. 14 Alabama Wednesday and dropped a 9-5 decision to the Crimson Tide. The Bulldogs currently reside in third place in the league standings. As a team, Samford is hitting .278 - sixth in the SoCon - and is led by Tyler Filliben’s .338 mark. The pitching staff sports a 5.80 ERA while opposing batters are hitting .276 off the Bulldogs. RHP Alex Ledford will toe the rubber in the series opener, followed by RHP Jared Brasher Saturday and RHP Cole Limbaugh Sunday.
Following the series with Samford, UNCG will close the regular season with six-straight games on the road. The Spartans travel to Wofford next weekend before heading to The Citadel in two weeks.
