Women’s Golf Wraps Up Day One At SoCon Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team opened the 2014 Southern Conference Championships Sunday afternoon at the Moss Creek Country Club North Course in Hilton Head, S.C. Round two of the three-day, 54-hole event begins Monday with tee times and the Spartans are slated to begin between 8:00-8:40 a.m. with live scoring available via

Sophomore Sammie Buchanan (Bluffton, S.C./Bluffton) is the Spartans’ top finisher after the first round, sitting in a tie for 19th place overall. Buchanan carded a 9-over par 81 in the first 18 holes and is eight shots off the lead held by Emily McLennan of Chattanooga with a 1-over par 73 as no golfers reached the par-72 mark or better Sunday.

Junior Berglind Bjornsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Menntaskolinn I Reykjavik) was tied for 28th overall with an 11-over par 83. Freshmen Maddie MacClurg (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) carded an 86 to sit in 36th place while classmate Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) rounded out the counting scores with an 87.

UNCG sits in ninth place after the first round with a score of 337 while Furman holds the 18-hole lead with a 305. The Paladins own a seven-shot lead on both Chattanooga and Samford heading into round two Monday.
