Softball Drops Single Game to Chattanooga, 9-1
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team resumed its single game and fell 9-1 to Chattanooga in game one that was continued from Saturday afternoon. The Spartans will play a doubleheader against the Mocs to complete the three-game series.
After resuming the game in the seventh inning, the Mocs received a solo home run from Nicole Osterman, her first of the season, to increase their lead to 9-1.
UNCG couldn’t push across any runs in the bottom of the seventh giving Chattanooga the victory.
Katie Henderson improved to 9-5 on the season and Taylor Deason picked up her fourth save in relief. Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) fell to 6-9 on the season.
Sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) went 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
Chattanooga took a 2-0 lead in the second inning off three hits. Jesslyn Stockard walked to start the inning and Stephanie Rieck singled. Kaiti Dutton singled up the middle to load the bases. After an out, Sarah Beth Roberts singled to third for the first run. Alyssa Taylor brought home the second run on a fielder’s choice to the shortstop.
In the fourth inning, the Spartans cut the lead to 2-1 after a RBI double from Lindsay Thomas. Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) singled to start the frame. Freshman Emily Lopez (Charlotte, N.C./Olympic) pinch ran and scored on the Thomas double.
The Mocs added an insurance run in the fifth inning scoring a run with two outs on a bases-loaded walk. Sam Taylor earned the RBI off the walk.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Spartans had an opportunity to tie the game with runners on first and third with one out. Junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) singled and moved to second after senior Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison) laid down a sacrifice bunt. Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) singled to centerfield. Chattanooga brought in a new pitcher Taylor Deason, who ended the inning after inducing a groundball double play.
Chattanooga broke open the game with a five-run sixth inning that included two home runs. Stockard hit a three-run home run and Dutton blasted a two-run home run all with two outs.
Hanks started the game for UNCG lasting five innings after allowing five earned runs on seven hits. Chattanooga’s Katie Henderson went 4.1 innings allowing just one earned run.
