Menís Golf Sits In Fifth Place After 36 Holes At USF Invitational
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team continued its strong showing at the USF Invitational in round two Monday as the Spartans posted a 2-over par 290 and sits in fifth place overall after day two at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. The event includes seven teams ranked in the top 50 in the country. The Spartans will tee off for the third and final round Tuesday morning with tee times on hole No. 1 between 8:50-9:30 a.m.
The Spartans own a 36-hole score of 565 (275-290) and are 11-under for the first two days of the event. Tournament host South Florida leads the team standings with a 550, after shooting a 19-under par 269 score Monday while Florida State is second with a 559 (275-289).
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) continues to lead the way as he is tied for sixth overall with a 6-under par 138 (63-75). Dixon followed his record-tying opening round score of 63 with a 3-over par 75 Monday. A day after notching eight birdies in round one, he followed with two birdies in round two to go along with five bogeys.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) posted the Spartans’ top score in round two as he fired a 2-under par 70. Jenkins moved up 17 spots in the standings and sits in a tie for 20th overall with a 2-under par 142 (72-70). For the second straight day, he notched an eagle in the round, accomplishing the feat this time on the par-5 hole No. 2. He also recorded four birdies on the day, but had a double-bogey and a bogey on his card.
Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) continued his strong play as he is tied for 30th overall with a 1-under par 143. He followed up his 71 score Sunday with an even par 72 Monday as he had three birdies and three bogeys.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) is tied for 52nd overall with a 3-over 147 after posting a 1-over par 73 in round two. Junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive), who began the day in a tie for 13th place, had his round disqualified for an incorrect scorecard signing.
The USF Invitational features 17 total teams, including seven ranked in the top 50 in the nation. Joining the No. 64 Spartans in the field include No. 7 Illinois, No. 20 Florida State, No. 23 Auburn, No. 33 South Florida, No. 35 Mercer, No. 36 Purdue, No. 37 Memphis, Ohio State, College of Charleston, Wisconsin, Florida, Eastern Michigan, DePaul, Cincinnati, Marquette and Air Force.
