Men's Tennis Shuts out USC Upstate, 7-0
GREENSBORO, N.C. -The UNCG men’s tennis team finished the weekend with two victories after taking down USC Upstate, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
UNCG took the doubles point with two doubles victories. James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./ Brookwood ) took down Matthias Kidler and Ramon Simonetti 6-3 at the No. 1 doubles spot. Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) and Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./ Lakeland) won 6-5 after a 7-4 tiebreak win over Gonzalo Bianco and Yvon Haessig. Nazhone Wilkins (Burnsville, Minnesota/Home schooled) and Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./ Ragsdale) fell 6-5 at No. 3 doubles. Jamie Yates and Rajanvir Dharni won the tiebreaker, 7-4.
At No. 1 singles, Sarioglu defeated Simonetti 6-3, 6-1 to put the Spartans up 2-0.
Phillips took down Bianco 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the third point of the afternoon.
Dougherty fell in set one 6-2 to Haessig, but bounced back to win sets two and three 6-3, 6-0. Dougherty clinched the match with his three set victory.
Mack finished fourth at No. 5 singles and defeated Dharni 6-2, 6-2.
Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./ Park Vista) beat Jamie Yates 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.At No. 6 singles, Smith defeated Carlos Tajes 6-5 (7-4), 6-4.
With the win, UNCG improves to 2-2 on the season.
The Spartans head to Atlanta, Ga. next weekend to take on Georiga State and Tennessee Tech.
