GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior right-handed pitcher Max Povse (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) has been named the preseason Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year according to an announcement this week by the publication Perfect Game.

Povse made a team-best 14 appearances (all starts) on the bump as UNCG’s Friday starter during the 2013 season. He compiled a 4-4 record and 4.75 earned run average over 77.2 innings while fanning a squad-best 81 batters. Opponents hit just .248 against him and he tallied at least three strikeouts in every game he pitched

Povse tossed the first complete-game shutout of his career at College of Charleston (April 5), allowing just five hits and striking out seven in a 12-0 Spartan victory. He averaged at least five innings pitched in all of his starts and held opposing batters to a .185 average with runners on base

In picking up his first win of the campaign against Marist (March 9), Povse gave up just one earned run on three hits in 5.1 innings while adding six strikeouts. He produced a quality start at Furman and was credited with the win after hurling six innings and allowing just three earned runs with five strikeouts

Povse threw at least 100 pitches in nine of his appearances and fanned a career-high nine against No. 22 Georgia Southern (March 28) at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Over the summer, Povse pitched for the Staunton Braves of the Valley League and helped the team qualify for the league playoffs. He threw 54 innings, striking out 60 batters over 54 innings while compiling a 3.33 earned run average. Povse was also selected to the South Division All-Star Team and threw an inning against the North Division All-Stars, earning the save and striking out two as the South Division won 5-1.

His most impressive performance of the summer occurred June 8 when he hurled eight innings of shutout baseball, limiting the Covington Lumberjacks to just two hits while striking out 10 in a 9-1 victory.

Povse was named the top professional prospect in the Valley League by both Baseball America and Perfect Game.

The Spartans open the 2014 campaign Friday, Feb. 14 when they host Atlantic 10 outfit George Washington in the first game of a three-contest set at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. First pitch for the season opener is slated for 4 p.m.
