Menís Soccer Drops Road Game At Wofford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team suffered its first loss in Southern Conference play Saturday evening as the Spartans dropped a 5-1 decision to Wofford on the road. Redshirt freshman Andrew Dilley (Lexington, N.C./Central Davidson) scored his first career goal late in the second half to account for the Spartans’ scoring.
Wofford (8-5-1, 4-1-0 SoCon) maintained sole possession of first place in the SoCon with the victory as it scored three first half goals as it out-shot UNCG 11-2 in the first 45 minutes. The Terriers scored two of their first three goals off of long throw-ins from Billy Padula and got their third goal when Matthew Aurednik took advantage of a UNCG defensive miscue to get in behind the defense in the 33rd minute.
Connor Davis scored the first goal of the game in the seventh minute as he headed home a Padula throw-in. Davis leads the SoCon in scoring with nine goals this year. Forrest Lasso put Wofford up 3-0 with a header goal in the 40th minute of play off a throw-in as well.
The Terriers continued to add to their lead in the second half as they got goals in the 70th and 80th minute. Matt Frongello scored the first goal of the second half, while Benny Puetter added an unassisted goal to give Wofford a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans (7-6-2, 2-1-1 SoCon) spoiled the Terriers shutout attempt in the 90th minute of play as they found the back of the net with 50 seconds remaining. UNCG had a corner kick with a minute left in regulation and Nathan Bunch (Raleigh, N.C./Incarnate Word) sent the ball into the box where it fell in a cluster of players. Dilley was able to pounce on the loose ball in traffic and poke it past Wofford goalkeeper Garrett Closs for his first career goal.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) played the first half for the Spartans and allowed three goals while making three saves. Davis Griffin (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) played the second half and allowed two goals while making a pair of saves.
The Spartans will be off during the midweek for the first time this season before returning to action for their final home game of the regular season Saturday night as they host Georgia Southern for Homecoming. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. and UNCG will honor its senior class prior to the game while fireworks will be available post-game.
