TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – UNCG senior cross country runner Paul Chelimo (Chebiemit, Kenya/Chebiemit Boys School) won the white race at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational Saturday morning while junior Paul Katam (Eldoret, Kenya/Sacho) finished third in the 8,000-meter race at the LaVern Gbson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., the home of the 2013 NCAA National Championships.
Chelimo, running in his first race of the cross country season, posted the top time in the second race of the day, finishing in 24:13.25 easily out-distancing his nearest opponent by 17 seconds. Luis Varges of Elon finished second in a time of 24:30.11.
Katam also was running his first race of the season, placed third with a time of 24:37.83 to give the Spartans two of the top three finishers in the race. Their performances allowed the Spartans to finish second as a team in the White Race with 119 points, trailing only Ohio with 99 points.
Senior Abraham Kemboi (Eldoret, Kenya/Kipkabus) placed 10th in the race, giving the Spartans three in the top 10 as he posted a time of 25:18.52. Junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) rounded out the top four for UNCG as he turned in a time of 25:33.78 to place 25th overall.
The Spartans return to action Nov. 2 as they travel to Birmingham, Ala., for the 2013 Southern Conference Championships. Chelimo has won the past two SoCon titles in the race and will be looking for his third cross country crown of his career.
