Povse Named Valley League Top Professional Prospect
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior right-handed pitcher Max Povse (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) has been named the Valley Baseball League’s top professional prospect by both Baseball America and Perfect Game.
Povse pitched for the Staunton Braves over the summer and helped the team qualify for the league playoffs. He threw 54 innings, striking out 60 batters over 54 innings while compiling a 3.33 earned run average. Povse was also selected to the South Division All-Star Team and threw an inning against the North Division All-Stars, earning the save and strking out two as the South Division won 5-1.
His most impressive performance of the summer occurred June 8 when he hurled eight innings of shutout baseball, limiting the Covington Lumberjacks to just two hits while striking out 10 in a 9-1 victory.
Povse made a team-best 14 appearances (all starts) on the bump as UNCG’s Friday starter during the 2013 season. He compiled a 4-4 record and 4.75 earned run average over 77.2 innings while fanning a squad-best 81 batters. Opponents hit just .248 against him and he tallied at least three strikeouts in every game he pitched
Povse tossed the first complete-game shutout of his career at College of Charleston (April 5), allowing just five hits and striking out seven in a 12-0 Spartan victory. He averaged at least five innings pitched in all of his starts and held opposing batters to a .185 average with runners on base
In picking up his first win of the campaign against Marist (March 9), Povse gave up just one earned run on three hits in 5.1 innings while adding six strikeouts. He produced a quality start at Furman and was credited with the win after hurling six innings and allowing just three earned runs with five strikeoutsPovse threw at least 100 pitches in nine of his appearances and fanned a career-high nine against No. 22 Georgia Southern (March 28) at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
