Baseball Closes Nonconference Slate Against Duke
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team ends its season with four home games this week, first hosting Duke Tuesday to wrap up the season series between the teams. The Spartans dropped two of three at Furman over the weekend, winning the series opener 16-4 before falling 13-7 Saturday and 6-4 Sunday.
The series saw four Spartans hit at least .500 at the dish with redshirt freshman infielder Nin Marrero batting .583 (7-for-12) with four RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Eric Kalbfleisch racked up seven hits in 14 at bats with three doubles, four runs scored and his first career grand slam in the top of the ninth of Saturday's contest. Additionally, junior LHP Dylan Hathcock was very effective in 5.1 innings of relief - allowing just one run on four hits while striking out two batters.
UNCG looks to avenge a 17-2 setback at the hands of the Blue Devils April 9 in Durham. The Spartans held a 2-0 advantage going into the bottom of the third, but Duke put together 17 unanswered runs in the third through fifth innings. Junior catcher Cambric Moye was 1-for-2 in the game while also tallying UNCG's only RBI.
>>> Duke leads the all-time series between the schools by an 8-4 count. Last season, the Spartans picked up a 4-3 victory over the Blue Devils in Durham. UNCG rallied for three unanswered runs in the final four innings to beat Duke in that meeting.
>>> Senior Christian Wolfe's recently completed 21-game hitting streak is tied for the program record as Tim Giles also recorded a base knock in 21-straight contests spanning the 1999 and 2000 campaigns.
>>> The Spartans lead the Southern Conference in batting average (.310) and hits (575) while also ranking in the top three in doubles, triples and total bases.
>>> On the national scale (as of May 12), the Blue and Gold reside in the top 25 nationally in hits (fourth), batting average (12th), doubles (14th), slugging percentage (18th), doubles per game (19th), home runs (20th), sacrifce flies (21st) and home runs per game (22nd), Individually, Wolfe is sixth in batting average and 11th in hits while junior infielder Trevor Edwards is 10th in sacrifice flies, 21st in home runs and 23rd in home runs per game. Kalbfleisch is also 14th in doubles (second among SoCon players) and 16th in doubles per game.
>>> UNCG has three victories over ranked teams this campaign - two wins over No. 22 Georgia Southern and a road triumph against No. 16 NC State back on March 19. The series win over the Eagles also marked the first against a ranked team since 2007 when the Spartans beat No. 27 College of Charleston two games to one in a SoCon set.
>>> Edwards is the team leader in home runs with 12. He also has 38 career round-trippers - the most of any active SoCon player. He needs just one more to move into sole possession of first place on the program career list.
>>> The Spartans have had great success when scoring six or more runs this season, compiling a record of 21-9.
>>> With four home runs in the series against Furman, UNCG raised its season total to 40 - eclipsing last season's mark of 39.
>>> Link Jarrett is the second head coach in the 24-year history of UNCG baseball. He spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator at Auburn University.
>>> The Blue and Gold will close the regular season this weekend, hosting league foe The Citadel for three games.
