Furman Evens Series With 13-7 Victory
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman scored six two-out runs in the bottom of the second and recorded a 13-7 victory to even its Southern Conference series with the UNCG baseball team Saturday afternoon at Latham Stadium. The Spartans fall to 22-28 overall and 9-17 in league play while the Paladins improve to 27-23 and 13-16.
Sophomore outfielder Eric Kalbfleisch went 3-for-5 in the contest with two doubles, a grand slam and a run scored while redshirt freshman infielder Nin Marrero was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Kalbfleisch now has a team-leading 20 doubles and is second in the league in two-baggers.
Senior LHP Corey Taylor suffered the loss to drop to 1-7 on the season, allowing seven runs on nine hits with three walks in just two innings pitched.
Furman started the scoring in the bottom of the first when Hunter Burton reached on a leadoff walk. Taylor Johnson and Greg Harrison followed with a single and double to make the score 1-0 after an inning.
After UNCG grounded into its second double play of the game in the top of the second, the Paladins exploded for six runs on seven total hits in the inning to put the contest away early. Furman put together a string of six-straight base knocks before Griffin Davis struck out looking to end the frame.
The Spartans got onto the scoreboard in the top of the third as with one out and junior outfielder Cole Harrison on third after a leadoff walk and two singles, senior infielder Trevor Edwards flied out to left field deep enough to score the runner. Senior RHP and reliever Dominique Vattuone pitched a scoreless third inning, but Chris Ohmstede drilled a two-out, three-run home run to left center to extend the home team's cushion to 10-1.
The teams traded runs in the fifth inning before sophomore RHP Adam Boghosian ran into some trouble in the bottom of the sixth – loading the bases with one out. He was able to escape without damage, however, as the UNCG middle infield turned a 6-4-3 double play.
Furman scored again in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by Taylor Johnson, pushing the score to 12-2. The Spartans had a chance to answer in the top of the eighth as Kalbfleisch and Moye produced a double and single with two away, but sophomore designated hitter Zac MacAneney flew out to left to end the inning.
The Paladins completed their scoring in the bottom of the eighth as junior RHP Dylan Thompson walked Heath Burton with two outs and the bases loaded.
The Blue and Gold mounted a rally in its last at bat as junior infielder Sean Guite hit a sacrifice fly which scored redshirt sophomore Ray Crawford with the bases loaded and no outs. Senior infielder Lloyd Enzor walked to load the bases again before Kalbfleisch crushed a ball over the right field fence for the Spartans' second grand slam of the season. That would be the final run of the contest as MacAneney flew out to right center for the last out.
The series finale and rubber game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Latham Stadium.
