Baseball Hosts The Citadel To Close Out 2013 Season
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team will play its final games of the 2013 season this weekend, hosting The Citadel for a Southern Conference series at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Bulldogs will take a top-four seed into the league tournament next weekend, currently sitting in second place in the SoCon standings with a 17-10 ledger.
The series begins Thursday, May 16 at 6 p.m. and continues Friday at 6 p.m. before wrapping up Saturday at 2 p.m. The Spartans will celebrate its eight seniors Saturday in a pregame ceremony on the field.
The matchp this weekend features the two top offensive clubs in the league as UNCG is batting .309 and The Citadel .305. The Bulldogs lead the conference in on base percentage, RBI and home runs. The Spartans have split their last six SoCon contests, taking two of three at Samford before dropping the final two games of the Furman series in Greenville over the weekend.
In a 12-2 loss to Duke Tuesday, senior infielder TJ Spina was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored - raising his batting average to a team third-best .319. Senior outfielder Christian Wolfe is the squad's leader, as well as tops in the Southern Conference, at .407. He has been ranked as high as sixth in the nation this year.
>>> The Citadel leads the all-time series between the schools by a 31-23 count. Last season, the Bulldogs pulled off the sweep with scores of 3-0, 5-4 and 8-7. The Spartans took all three games from The Citadel in 2011 on the way to a second-place finish in the league standings.
>>> Senior Christian Wolfe's recently completed 21-game hitting streak is tied for the program record as Tim Giles also recorded a base knock in 21-straight contests spanning the 1999 and 2000 campaigns.
>>> The Spartans lead the Southern Conference in batting average (.309) and hits (582) while also ranking in the top three in doubles, triples and total bases.
>>> On the national scale (as of May 12), the Blue and Gold reside in the top 25 nationally in hits (fourth), batting average (12th), doubles (14th), slugging percentage (18th), doubles per game (19th), home runs (20th), sacrifce flies (21st) and home runs per game (22nd), Individually, Wolfe is sixth in batting average and 11th in hits while junior infielder Trevor Edwards is 10th in sacrifice flies, 21st in home runs and 23rd in home runs per game. Kalbfleisch is also 14th in doubles (second among SoCon players) and 16th in doubles per game.
>>> UNCG has three victories over ranked teams this campaign - two wins over No. 22 Georgia Southern and a road triumph against No. 16 NC State back on March 19. The series win over the Eagles also marked the first against a ranked team since 2007 when the Spartans beat No. 27 College of Charleston two games to one in a SoCon set.
>>> Edwards is the team leader in home runs with 12. He also has 38 career round-trippers - the most of any active SoCon player. He needs just one more to move into sole possession of first place on the program career list.
