Baseball Loses Series Finale At Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman struck early and often Sunday and held on for a 6-4 Southern Conference victory over the UNCG baseball team at Latham Stadium. The Paladins clinched the series, winning two straight after the Spartans won Friday's contest.
For the second consecutive day, the UNCG starting pitcher lasted just two innings. Sophomore RHP Brennen James gave up five runs (all earned) on six hits while striking out a batter. The Spartan bullpen turned in an impressive effort as three UNCG pitchers combined for six scoreless innings and allowed just one run on five hits with three strikeouts.
Senior infielder Lloyd Enzor tallied the only multiple hit effort in the Spartan lineup as he was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Senior infielder Trevor Edwards drove in three runs with one swing as he tied the program career record for home runs with his 38th round-tripper.
After the Spartans went down in order in the top of the first, the Paladins jumped ahead thanks to a two-out, two-run home run by Greg Harrison. The Blue and Gold answered back in the second with a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder Zac MacAneney, but Furman plated three more runs on three hits – including a two-run double by Will Muzika. The home team scored another run for good measure in the third frame via a solo home run by Paul Nitto, making it a 6-1 ballgame.
UNCG mounted a rally in the top of the sixth as Wolfe and Spina both singled to lead off the inning. Edwards then crushed a ball that fell over the center field fence for a three-run blast which sliced the Paladin advantage to 6-4.
Despite holding Furman scoreless since the third inning, the Spartans could not muster any more offense as they recorded just one hit in the final three frames.
The Blue and Gold closes the season next week with four home games. UNCG will first end nonconference play Tuesday with a contest against Duke at the UNCG Baseball Stadium before hosting The Citadel in its final SoCon series. First pitch against the Blue Devils is slated for 6 p.m.
