GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG redshirt freshman second baseman Benigno Marrero (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) has been named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year by the league's media members, according to the release of the all-conference teams Monday afternoon.

Marrero becomes the first UNCG player to receive the league's top freshman honor since Danny Valencia was also recognized by the media panel in 2004.

A total of four Spartans garnered awards as fellow rookie Ryan Clark (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) was named to the All-Freshman Team while senior outfielder Christian Wolfe (Bel Air, Md./Hartford CC) was honored on the first team by both the coaches and media. Rounding out the UNCG selections is senior utility player Trevor Edwards (Toronto, Ontario/Taddle Creek Academy) who racked up second-team accolades at third base.

Wolfe finished his senior season with a .421 batting average, setting the single-season record by surpassing Ryan Gordon's 2003 mark of .416. He ended up first on the squad in not only batting average, but also runs scored, hits, total bases, slugging percentage and on base percentage. Wolfe also put together a career-best 21-game hitting streak from March 26-April 30, tying Jeremy Purcell for the program record. He produced a team-high 30 multiple-hit games and 11 multiple-RBI efforts.

The All-America candidate turned in the top batting average among league players while also ranking in the top 10 in hits (second), doubles (tied for third), on base percentage (fourth), total bases (ninth) and slugging percentage (10th). He will become the first Spartan since Jermaine Mitchell in 2006 to lead the circuit in batting average. In the latest national rankings, Wolfe is 11th in batting average, 14th in hits and 35th in doubles per game. His 88 hits are the fourth most in a single season in UNCG history.

Edwards became the all-time Spartan leader in career home runs when he hit a three-run walkoff to help the Blue and Gold down The Citadel last Friday. He owns 39 round-trippers in four seasons and finished the season with a team-best 13 – tied for the sixth most in a single season at UNCG. Among SoCon players, he is currently second in sacrifice flies, tied for fourth in home runs and tied for 10th in RBIs. Edwards batted .287 this season while leading the Spartans in at bats and RBIs while ranking second in runs scored and total bases as well as third in doubles.

On the national stage, Edwards is 11th in sacrifice flies, 23rd in home runs and 24th in home runs per game. He tallied a team-high 14 multiple-RBI games while also chipping in with 17 multiple-hit performances.

Marrero turned in a solid debut campaign in a Spartan uniform, serving as UNCG's second baseman in all but one game this season. He hit a team second-best .352 with 70 hits, 10 doubles, 28 RBIs, 36 runs scored and 89 total bases. In the Southern Conference rankings, Marrero was ninth in batting average. He recorded a Spartan second-best 24 multiple-hit efforts and slugged .447 for the season as well as compiling an on base percentage of .405.

Developing into the Spartans' top option out of the bullpen, Clark produced a stellar rookie season in which he was 5-1 overall with a 2.05 earned run average and two saves in 26 appearances. He struck out 25 batters in 30.1 innings pitched and walked just five. Clark has allowed just one earned run in his last nine outings and gave up just four extra-base hits the entire season.
