Hollstegge selected by Oakland Athletics in MLB Draft
SECAUCUS, N.J. - UNCG junior right-handed pitcher Tyler Hollstegge was selected on Wednesday as part of the third day of selections in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Hollstegge was drafted in the 21st round by the Oakland Athletics with the 649th overall pick. On Monday, the first round took place with 60 picks being made on the first day. The draft picked up on Tuesday with rounds 2-15 and rounds 16-40 concluded the draft on Wednesday.
Hollstegge's selection marked the 17th time in the past 19 years that at least one UNCG player has been drafted. He is also the 16th pitcher in the past 15 seasons to be drafted. The junior is the third Spartan pitcher in the last four years to be selected by the AL West representative Oakland A's.
"I'm very excited about this opportunity that lies ahead." Hollstegge said, "I'm grateful for the coaching staff and facilities at UNCG and wouldn't have gotten here without them."
The West Chester, Ohio, native has amassed 125 1/3 innings of work during his three years in a Spartan uniform and has appeared in 56 games while starting 12 of them.
The 2012 campaign was the best of Hollstegge's career, as he turned in a 3.75 ERA and led the team with six wins and 60 innings pitched. He had a career-high 37 strikeouts and pitched two scoreless innings in relief on May 6 as UNCG defeated Appalachian State, 10-8, to hand the Mountaineers only their second home loss of the year.
Perhaps his best appearance of the season came on April 24 when he collected a win against No. 10 North Carolina. Hollstegge worked 5 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief as UNCG defeated the Tar Heels, 8-4, for the first time ever in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Hollstegge started the season off with a bang as he tossed five shutout innings in UNCG's 13-0 win against Delaware State, which kicked off a seven-game winning streak to start the year.
Hollstegge will have until July 13 to decide whether to sign a professional contract or return to UNCG for his senior season.
