Mountaineers use walk-off home run to deflate UNCG, 5-4
BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State's Daniel Kassouf tied a Mountaineer record with his 16th home run of the season and cashed it in at the right time as the blast made the Mountaineers walk-off winners in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4, over UNCG in Southern Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Smith Stadium.
For the second consecutive game, Appalachian State (34-10, 18-5 SoCon) held off a late charge from UNCG to hold on for a one-run victory and to secure the series victory as Tyler Moore gathered the win by only throwing five pitches.
UNCG (21-23, 6-17 SoCon) saw Cambric Moye crush a home run for the second straight game as it found itself on the losing end for the fifth game in a row.
The Mountaineers drew first blood as they plated a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Hector Crespo drew a leadoff walk and Tyler Zupcic followed up with a single. Will Callaway reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second as Crespo scooted home on a throwing error to give Appalachian State an early 1-0 lead.
UNCG starter Dylan Hathcock and the Mountaineers' Seth Grant settled in and didn't allow any runs the rest of their respective afternoons. Grant tossed six innings of nine-hit shutout ball. Hathcock went five innings on the day and scattered six hits while striking out a batter.
Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Mountaineers' Trey Holmes welcomed UNCG reliever Adam Boghosian with a solo blast to right center to make it a 2-0 game. Appalachian State tacked on two more runs in the inning after Preston Troutman, who singled, scored on a wild pitch from Boghosian. Two batters later, Callaway stroked an RBI single up the middle off of Zach Furl to make it a four-run game, 4-0.
Much like Friday night's game, the Spartan offense came to life late. In the top of the seventh, Christian Wolfe scored UNCG's first run of the game after junior Zach Leach hit a 405-foot RBI triple to dead center to cut the deficit to three, 4-1.
Trailing by three in the eighth inning, Kris Richards singled through the right side to put a runner aboard with one out in the frame. The next batter, Moye, launched his third dinger of the season to make it a 4-3 game. He came into the weekend with only one home run and has now hit one in back-to-back games to the same spot in left center.
With Appalachian State's Nathan Hyatt on the mound for the second game in a row, UNCG found a way to plate a run after nearly scoring two in yesterday's affair. Bobby Martin singled to lead off the frame and was advanced to second after Wolfe laid down a sacrifice bunt. Leach followed up with a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. Following a groundout, Thomas Troelstrup walked to load the bases with two away. Richards drew a four-pitch walk to tie the game at four. However, Moore came in and ended the threat.
With the score tied at four in the bottom of the ninth, the Mountaineers' Kassouf made sure there weren't extra innings as he hit the second pitch he saw from Tyler Hollstegge over the left field fence for the walk-off victory.
Hyatt's blown save was the first of the year as he was successful in his first 11. Moore (3-1) collected the win as he faced only one batter in the top of the ninth.
Hollstegge (4-6) was the hard-luck loser as he allowed Kassoufs' home run. Corey Taylor enjoyed two innings of shutout ball.
Troelstrup and Moye paced the Spartan offense as both had three-hit performances. Richards and Martin enjoyed a multi-hit game as both had two hits apiece. All but one starter collected a hit for UNCG.
Zupcic went 3-for-4 to lead the Mountaineer offense. Troutman and Tyler Tewell collected two hits each on the afternoon.
The Spartans will look to avoid their second straight sweep as they battle Appalachian State in the series finale at Sunday 1 p.m.
