College of Charleston spoils UNCG’s senior day, 10-4
GREENSBORO, N.C. – College of Charleston's Brandon Murray and Rob Harding went a combined 5-for-8 with five RBI and scored two runs as the Cougars hung a five-spot in the seventh inning to down UNCG, 10-4, on Senior Day in Southern Conference action at UNCG Baseball Stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the game, UNCG honored seven seniors for their contributions to the team as all seven of them got into the game in UNCG's 2012 season finale.
UNCG (25-27, 10-20 SoCon) scored single runs in three of the last four innings but was unable to counter the five-run seventh inning by the Cougars.
College of Charleston (37-18, 21-9 SoCon) used strong pitching from starter Matt Pegler (9-2) as he improved to 5-0 when taking the bump after his team took a loss in the previous game. The Cougars' win, coupled with Appalachian State's 9-6 loss to Western Carolina, clinched a share of the regular season title for CofC, who will be the second seed in the upcoming SoCon Championship as the Mountaineers hold the tiebreaker.
College of Charleston wasted no time in getting to work offensively as Marty Gantt started the game off with a single off of starter Lee Gilliam (2-3). Two batters later, Daniel Aldrich connected on a mammoth two-run blast to right field to give the Cougars a lead they would never relinquish, 2-0.
The Spartans' Christian Wolfe did his best imitation of Aldrich as he launched a solo shot to the same spot to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
The Cougars plated a single run in the third inning after Harding collected his first of four RBI on the day via sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game. In the fourth, following a bizarre play where at least six Spartans got a hand in the play, Gunnar Heidt scooted home on a throwing error to extend the lead to three, 4-1.
UNCG scored a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning thanks to the senior combo of Bobby Martin and Thomas Troelstrup. Martin reached after getting plunked and proceeded to steal second and would later advance to third on a flyout. With a runner on third with one out, Troelstrup pleased the crowd as he reached on an error, but was credited with an RBI to make it a 4-2 game.
In the seventh inning, CofC plated five runs on four hits. Murray plated Gantt with an RBI single for the inning's first run. Two batters later, Harding delivered the knockout blow with a bases-clearing three-run double and would later score on a RBI single by Cody Martin to make it a 9-2 game.
However, the Spartans plated a run as senior Kris Richards got in on the action as he scored on a wild pitch from Cougar reliever Nick Osterman.
Both teams would plate a run in the ninth inning. Brandon Glazer motored home on a wild pitch to put the Cougars into double-digits in the run column. UNCG would push across the game's last run as pinch-hitter Tino Leite collected an RBI via groundout to make it a 10-4 game.
Gilliam was handed the loss as he was tagged for four runs (three earned) in four innings of work as he struck out four batters on 66 pitches.
Pegler got the win as he cruised through six innings on 74 pitches and allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits and struck out five batters.
Richards and Wolfe enjoyed multi-hit performances as both went 2-for-4. Leite, Wolfe and Troelstrup collected an RBI each.
Murray led the Cougar offense with three hits and Harding hit a double and finished the day with four RBI.
Senior Richards finished the season with a team-high .342 batting average. Trevor Edwards hit a team-high 14 dingers while Enzor and Troelstrup tied for the team lead with 39 RBI.
