Baseball Names Captains For 2014 Campaign 02-05-2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior left-handed pitcher Dylan Hathcock (Tampa, Fla./Gaither), junior outfielder Zac MacAneney (Gibsonville, N.C./Virginia Tech) and junior infielder Eric Kalbfleisch (Pilot Mountain, N.C./North Stokes) have been named captains for the 2014 campaign according to an announcement Wednesday by head coach Link Jarrett.

“Dylan, Eric and Zac represent so many outstanding qualities in their role as student-athletes at UNCG,” Jarrett said. “Being selected as captains by their teammates is a true honor, as well as a reflection of their work ethic, attitude and commitment on a daily basis. We are very proud of their representation of our program and look forward to their helping lead our baseball team into what promises to be a very exciting baseball season.”

Hathcock made 23 appearances and started three games for the Spartans in 2013 while racking up a team-best four saves. He threw the most innings (44.2) of any reliever and tallied the second-most strikeouts (39). UNCG captured 14 victories last season when Hathcock appeared on the bump – including the 8-5 win over then No. 16 and eventual College World Series participant NC State in Raleigh where he earned the save by pitching a perfect 11th inning.

MacAneney played in 40 games last year, making 25 starts for the Blue and Gold. He hit .272 with 31 hits, four doubles, a triple, a home run, 19 RBI and 17 runs scored while swiping seven bases in nine attempts. MacAneney clubbed his first career grand slam in the third inning of the Spartans’ 10-4 victory over crosstown neighbor North Carolina A&T at NewBridge Bank Park (March 26) as part of a personal-best five-RBI effort. He also excelled in the series opener at Furman (May 10), going 4-for-5 with four runs scored, two RBI, a double and a stolen base

Kalbfleisch started 49 of the 52 games he played in 2013 and batted .310 – the fourth-highest mark on the squad. Altogether, he tallied 61 hits, 21 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 31 RBI and scored 30 runs. Kalbfleisch led the Spartans in doubles with 21, a mark that ranked him second in the Southern Conference. Kalbfleisch produced 16 multi-hit and five multi-RBI efforts and enjoyed a career-best nine-game hitting streak that is still active heading into the 2014 season. Defensively, he did not commit an error in 84 defensive chances. Kalbfleisch’s top single-game output occurred at Furman (May 11) when he hit UNCG’s second grand slam of the year as part of a 3-for-5 day at the plate that included four RBI, two doubles and a run scored.

The Spartans open the 2014 campaign Friday, Feb. 14 when they host Atlantic 10 outfit George Washington in the first game of a three-contest set at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. First pitch for the season opener is slated for 4 p.m.
