Softball Splits Final Day of Spartan Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team split a pair of games Sunday on the final day of the 2014 Spartan Classic at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans sit at 4-7 on the season after falling to Minnesota and earning a victory against Hampton.

In game one, the golden gophers used eight hits, two home runs and eight runs to run-rule UNCG in five innings.
Junior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) picked up an infield single and freshman Kendall McKinney (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) also had an infield single.
Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier) took the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. Hanks threw 3.1 innings, allowing six hits on five earned runs. Senior Sara Moulton (8-1) went the distance allowing just two hits with six strikeouts in the shutout.
Minnesota struck first in the third inning with three runs on a three-run home run from Kaitlyn Richardson. The inning started with Sydney Fabian reaching on an error. After a strikeout, Erica Meyer walked to put runners on first and second. Richardson launched a three-run home run to right field to give Minnesota a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Minnesota took a 7-0 lead after scoring four runs on four hits. With one out, Fabian roped an RBI double to left center and Tyler Walker followed with an RBI single up the middle. With two outs, Bree Blanchette lined a two-run single to right center to push the lead to 7-0.
UNCG 10, Hampton 2 (5)
In game two, the Spartans scored 10 runs on 11 hits to run-rule Hampton 10-2 in five innings.
Three UNCG hitters finished the game with two hits and two RBI in Nicole Thomas, Wright and McKinney.
UNCG struck first with six runs in the first inning off five hits. Sophomore Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) lead the game with a double just over the shortstop’s glove into left field. After two outs, Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) kept the inning alive after being hit by a pitch. Freshman Tory Wright Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion)
lined a two-run double to centerfield to plate two runs. McKinney doubled to right center to score Wright. Alcala singled up the middle and junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) loaded the bases after being hit. Sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) cleared the bases with a double scoring two runs and a third run came home off an error. The Spartans scored all six runs with two outs.
In the second inning, the Blue and Gold added three more runs on five hits. Sophomore Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) smoked her first home run of the season to lead off the frame. Senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park Secondary) doubled to right center and Nicole Thomas singled to left field to give UNCG an 8-0 lead. Wright singled to centerfield to put runners on first and second. McKinney doubled to left center scoring pinch runner Stephanie McKinney (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) from second base.
Hampton added a run in the third inning after Taylor McCoy earned an RBI groundout. The inning started with a swinging strikeout but Margret Wilkins singled to right field with one out. After an error, Wilkins moved to third and came home on McCoy’s ground out to second.
In the bottom of the fourth, Nicole Thomas roped a solo home run to dead centerfield to give UNCG a 10-1 lead.
Hanks allowed a run in the fifth inning but induced a ground out to end the game for UNCG. Hanks improves to 4-3 after throwing five innings, allowing six hits and one earned run with six strikeouts.
It is the first time that both Lindsay Thomas and Nicole Thomas each homered in a game.
