UNCG Volleyball July Notebook
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The matches may not start for another six weeks, but there is plenty going on with UNCG volleyball this summer. Check out some of the happenings around the program with this July update.
MacKenzie Moughon Added to 2013 Roster
Moughon (Mathews, Va./Mathews), a 5-9 outside hitter/defensive specialist, has enrolled at UNCG and will compete for the Spartans beginning with the 2013 season. She arrives in Greensboro after a successful prep career at Mathews High School.
The incoming freshman played four years of varsity volleyball under head coach and father Pat Moughon, earning first-team all-state honors twice and state MVP accolades in 2012. After leading the Blue Devils to a second-straight state championship this past season, Moughon was tabbed the D-2 state player of the year. She posted 32 kills in the title tilt against Stuarts Draft.
"We are excited to welcome MacKenzie into our Spartan volleyball family," head coach Patrick Nicholas said. "She comes from a great volleyball background and family, having played for her mother in high school. MacKenzie is a gym rat and will add depth to our roster for the upcoming seasons."
In addition to the state championships, Moughon also led her side to four district titles and four Region A crowns. She was also named to the 2013 Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Team and competed for the East squad.
UNCG Volleyball Camps Going Strong
Over 100 young women have descended on Fleming Gymnasium this week for UNCG Volleyball Camp. The day camp attracted over 60 participants while the elite/college prep camp has almost 40 ladies enrolled.
Chambers and Santiago Win Puerto Rico Junior National Championships
Senior outside hitter Karrian Chambers (College Station, Texas/A&M Consolidated) and sophomore libero Katherine Santiago (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) took part in the 2013 Puerto Rico Junior National Championships last month, coming away undefeated and with the tournament championship in the 23U division.
The Spartan duo played with Acroplis 1 and swept through the first two rounds to advance to the Gold Bracket as the top seed. Their team did not lose a set in the semifinals and championship match. It was the second consecutive tournament in which a team for which Santiago played won the event as she played for VB Rags in the 18U division last year – earning All-Tournament Team honors in the process.
"Playing in Puerto Rico was a great experience for me," Chambers said upon returning from the island. "It was hard for me at first to understand some of my teammates, but we grew to become a really tight-knit group. That really was key to our success. I was really happy to share this experience with Katherine as she helped me understand some of the nuances of the Puerto Rican culture."
