Volleyball Duo To Play In Puerto Rico National Championships
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team will have two of its players, senior outside hitter Karrian Chambers (College Station, Texas/A&M Consolidated) and sophomore libero Katherine Santiago (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez), participate in the fifth annual Jeep Puerto Rico Volleyball Championships slated for June 6-9 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center. Head coach Patrick Nicholas will also attend the event.
Chambers and Santiago will play for the same team in the 23U division, the oldest age grouping in the tournament field.
"I am really excited to play with people from different teams," Chambers said. "I am confident our team will do really well in the event."
Santiago competed in last year's event with her club team VB Rags and won the title while also earning recognition on the all-tournament team. Her squad also finished seventh in the 16-open division at the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics.
"This is a great opportunity for both Karrian and Katherine," Nicholas said. "Katherine has experienced great success in this tournament and I am thrilled our ladies will experience such a high level of volleyball. This tournament will help augment their skills and build their confidence heading into the fall season."
Chambers, who earned recognition on the 2012 All-Southern Conference second team, led UNCG with 400 kills and 3.64 kills per set last season while ending up second in aces (16) and third in total digs (287) and digs per set (2.61). She was fourth among league players in kills per set and paced the Spartans with 13 double-doubles – including seven straight to end the season.
Santiago enjoyed a highly-successful freshman campaign as one of two UNCG players to experience action in all 119 sets. She finished second on the squad with 449 digs and an average of 3.77 digs per set while producing eight 20-dig performances – including a career-best 32 against American Sept. 8 inside Fleming Gymnasium.
