GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team will host in-state foe Charlotte Wednesday, April 2 at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans sit at 6-9 with a 4-1 SoCon mark after defeating Western Carolina, 5-2 on Sunday. UNCG picked up victories from junior Stephanie Falcon(Marietta, Ga./Walton), classmate Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School), freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./ Indian Rocks Christian) and sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill). Gammie improved to 8-7 in singles and Falcon is 7-8 with the win in dual matches. Franco is 8-7 in singles while Grinberg has a 6-8 mark.
In doubles, Franco and Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/Gunes Koleii) are 6-1 for the season in doubles play. Falcon and Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) are 4-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Charlotte is 5-10 overall after falling 4-0 to Middle Tennessee last Friday at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club. Freshman Macy Vonderschmidt continues to lead the squad with seven dual-match singles victories. Juniors Lisa Grosselius and Natsuko Takayangi are next with six and five, respectively, this spring.Vonderschmidt also owns a team-high five doubles victories edging out the four by Takayanagi and sophomore Jessica Perez.
The 49ers own a 15-10 all-time series lead entering Wednesday, though the Spartans has captured the last three meetings. In the last meeting, UNCG took down Charlotte, 5-2, back on April 4 in 2012.
