Women's Tennis Hosts MTSU; Travels to WCU this weekend
GREENSBORO, N.C.- The UNCG women’s tennis team has a pair of matches this weekend as the Spartans welcome in Middle Tennessee but also travel to Western Carolina for another conference matchup.
UNCG will take on Middle Tennessee Saturday, March 29 at 4:30 p.m. at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. The Spartans then travel to Cullowhee, N.C. for a 1 p.m. match Sunday, March 30 against the Catamounts of Western Carolina.
UNCG sits at 5-8 overall, but 3-1 in conference play. The Spartans most recently defeated Appalachian State 5-2. UNCG went up 1-0 early in the match, after taking the doubles point. Freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) and senior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/Gunes Koleji) defeated Clare Cox and McKayla Zupan, 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. The Spartans earned their second doubles win at No. 1 doubles as Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./Clover) and Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) took down Mackenzie LaSure and Gabrielle Wreder 8-4.
Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School), Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton), Gammie, and Franco all earned victories for the Spartans in their singles matches. Gammie had the match clinching victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Brianna Armellino at No. 4 singles.
Franco and Yurtkuran are 4-1 in doubles play, with their most recent victory coming Thursday evening against App State.
Middle Tennessee is 7-6 so far this season while Western Carolina sits at 1-11-1. The Catamounts are 0-3 so far in Southern Conference play with losses to Samford, Wofford, and Georgia Southern.
