GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory against Southern Conference foe Wofford Friday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
With the victory, UNCG improves to 4-7, 2-0 in the SoCon on the season while Wofford falls to 5-7, 1-2 in the SoCon.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches against Wofford. Stephanie Falcon(Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) took down Kalli Karas and Taylor Carlson, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) fell to Catherine Martin and Mareli Sanchez, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./Clover) and Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School) clinched the point with an 8-3 victory against Sarah Evans and Julia Paulson.
In singles, Franco gave UNCG a 2-0 lead with a straight sets victory against Karas, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Grinberg won at No.6 single against Sanchez, 6-2, 6-1 to make it 3-0 Spartans.
Gammie clinched the victory at No. 4 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Martin. Falcon took down Julia Paulson, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Anane won in straight sets against Audrey Coventry, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
In the final match, senior Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/Gunes Koleji) battled at No. 1 singles but fell short against Evans, 6-4, 6-4.
