Women's Tennis Travels to Face No. 3 North Carolina Wednesday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team heads to Chapel Hill to take on No. 3 North Carolina Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Spartans enter the contest with a 0-1 record after falling to Wake Forest, 7-2, it their season opener Monday afternoon in Winston-Salem.
The Blue and Gold earned two singles victories from sophomore Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Britain/Newcastle Under Lyme School) and junior Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Broward Virtual School). Gammie pulled out a tough match in three sets winning the last two sets, 6-0, 10-3. Ellis also won a nail-bitter winning the final two sets, 6-3, 12-10 in the tiebreaker.
UNCG fell behind early in the match after dropping the doubles point and lost seven singles matches before winning the final two at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions.
North Carolina is the third ranked team in the ITA rankings and has four players ranked in the top 125 in singles. Freshman Jamie Loeb has the highest ranking at No. 2, followed by classmate Haley Carter (No. 5). Rounding out the rankings for UNC are sophomore Whitney Kay at No. 88 and sophomore Ashley Dai (No. 118). In doubles, all three teams are ranked with junior Carolina Price and Kay leading the way at No. 10. Freshmen duo Loeb and Carter sit at No. 12, while senior Laura Slater and sophomore Kate Vialle are No. 42.
