DAVIDSON, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team scored an early first half goal to defeat Davidson, 1-0, Friday night at Alumni Soccer Stadium.

“Tonight was a great win for us,” head coach Steve Nugent said. “I think the difference in the game was that first 10 minutes as we came out with great passion and emotion putting Davidson on its heels. I was happy with how our team responded to the first 15 minutes of the game.”

UNCG improves to 8-5-2, 3-1-2 in Southern Conference play and Davidson falls to 5-8-3, 2-3 in the SoCon. The Spartans extended their 25-game road unbeaten streak in SoCon games.  The Blue and Gold are 7-1-1 in road contests this season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) picked up her seventh shutout of the season after making five saves. Simmons made a couple of key saves in the second half including tipping a ball away from the goal off a corner kick in the 63rd minute.

UNCG took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute after Ashley Stokes (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) received a deflection off a Davidson defender and scored past the keeper. Stokes scored her third goal of the season to put the Spartans in front.

“The coaches talked a lot of anticipating the game,” Stokes said. “When a free kick is taken you have to expect the ball to get through and I was lucky to find the ball and finish the goal.”

The freshmen back line of Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammer School), Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegiate)
Kelsi Peters (Burlington, N.C./Walter M. Williams and Nicole Epstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) limited the Davidson offense to just nine shots in the game.

Four minutes into the game, the Spartans quickly put a shot on goal after sophomore Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) fired a shot just outside the box but senior Rachel Locke made the save for the Wildcats.

Senior Lauren Lover (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) had an attempt that went just wide in the 15th minute.

UNCG finished the half with four shots and two corner kicks. Simmons made three saves to keep the Wildcats off the board in the half.

The Spartans finish the road trip against Georgia Southern Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga.
