CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team finished day one at the Charlotte fall invitational Friday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex. The Spartans faced Campbell and Charlotte in doubles, while taking on East Carolina in singles action.
Sophomore Asha Iyengar (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) battled to a tough loss against Maria Storozheva (ECU), 6-3, 5-7, 11-9. Iyengar forced a third set tiebreaker, but lost 11-9. In doubles, freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) and sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) paired together to defeat Charlotte’s Lisa Grosselius/Macy Vonderschmidt, 8-4.
Sophomore Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Brittian/Newcastle Under Lyme School) teamed with junior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) to take down Jessica Perez/Natsuko Takayanagi (Charlotte), 8-4.
In singles, UNCG picked up two victories against East Carolina on day one. Grinberg continued her solid play by defeating Michelle Castro (ECU), 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.
Falcon came up just short falling in a three set tiebreaker to Neena Wanko (ECU), 4-6, 6-1, 11-9. Freshman Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) earned a straight sets win against Dana Gray (ECU), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). DeMoss won the second set tiebreaker 7-5 to win the match.
