ELON, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team completed day two at the Elon Invitational Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
In singles, sophomore Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Brittian/Newcastle Under Lyme School) went 1-1 earning a victory against UNC Asheville’s Christine Boissevan, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 10-6. Ellis came back to take the second set and the tiebreaker to pick up her first win of the fall season. Ellis dropped her final match of the day to Ekin Gunaysu (Winthrop), 4-6, 6-3, 12-10. Sophomore Asha Iyengar (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) went 2-0 earning a spot in the consolation final B-1 singles flight. Iyengar defeated Tamara Jeremic (NCCU), 6-3, 6-2 and Lindsey Buenger (USC Upstate), 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
Junior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) fell in a tough three-set match against UNC Asheville’s Zoe Hamel, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9. Falcon lost the third set tiebreaker 11-9 after winning the first set 6-4.
Sophomore Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Title Hill Wood School) fell in straight sets to Jordan Johnston from Elon, 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) dropped a straight sets match to Bryn Khoury (Elon), 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinal round.
Freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) lost in straight sets to Elon’s Barbora Lazarova, 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinal round. Classmate Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) fell in straight sets to Furman’s Karlee Bryde, 6-3, 7-6 (1).
Redshirt sophomore Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C./Zebulon B. Vance) fell in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to William and Mary’s Jackie Lee.
In doubles action, Anane and Falcon lost in the semifinals to Elon’s Johnston/Jansaker, 8-1.
The Spartans finish the tournament at the Elon invitational Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
