Women's Tennis Completes Day One at Elon Invite 09-13-2013

ELON, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team completed its first day at the Elon Invitational Friday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

In singles, sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and freshman Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) each picked up singles victories in the A-2 singles flight. Franco earned her first collegiate victory against Rebecca Wood (NCCU), 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 and Grinberg won a close three setter 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 against USC Upstate’s Talia Rojas.

Junior Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) lost a tough three-set match against Andressa Garcia (Winthrop), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the A-1 singles flight.

Sophomore Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Title Hill Wood School) fell in straight sets to UNC Asheville’s Ericka Rivero in the A-1 singles flight.

Sophomore Amy Ellis (Cheshire, Great Brittian/Newcastle Under Lyme School) lost in straight sets to Tolley Rice (Elon), 6-4, 6-2 in the A-3 singles flight. Freshman Masey DeMoss (Mayodan, N.C./McMichael) made her debut falling to Charleston Southern’s Gabriela Srodowski, 7-5, 7-5.

Redshirt sophomore Alisha Burton (Charlotte, N.C./Zebulon B. Vance) and sophomore Asha Iyengar (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) dropped matches in the B-1 singles flight.

In doubles action, Anane and Falcon teamed up to defeat Kissell/Bettiol from Western Carolina, 8-4.

The Spartans return to action tomorrow and finish play at the Elon invitational Sunday, Sept. 15 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
