SPARTANBURG, S.C. – More than 300 student-athletes earned spots on the Academic All-Southern Conference Team for the 2013 spring season, the league office announced Tuesday.
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade point average entering the fall season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded fall campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
UNCG landed 19 student-athletes on the All-Academic Team with women’s tennis senior Alex Whitehead (4.0) and women’s golf sophomore Andrea Rangel (4.0) leading the way. Both men’s and women’s golf squads each placed four members to tie men’s outdoor track and field for the most by sport for the Spartans.
The 321 student-athletes on the team surpassed last year's spring total by 11. All 12 SoCon institutions were represented on the team, which honored student-athletes from the sports of baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf and men's and women's outdoor track and field.
The league's 12 women's outdoor track and field teams provided the most academic all-conference members with 90, followed by men's outdoor track and field with 45 and baseball with 44.
Each of the 12 league schools placed at least 18 student-athletes on the team, with Western Carolina leading the way with 35. Wofford was right behind the Catamounts with 34, while Furman had 33 honored. Elon had 31 and Davidson and Samford had 30 each.
