Women's Tennis Heads to Furman, Then Wofford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's tennis program kicks off this weekend's Southern Conference competition when it travels to Greenville, N.C. to face Furman Saturday, April 6, before heading to Spartanburg, S.C. to play Wofford Sunday, April 7. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m.
"We have two tough conference matches this weekend," said head coach Jeff Trivette. "Furman always has a very good team, but we are also a very good team and we expect to win every time we step on the court. We are ready to compete."
The Spartans advanced their record to 11-5 and 7-1 in the SoCon after defeating Appalachian State Tuesday.
In doubles play, seniors Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) and Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) defeated Clare Cox and Mackenzie when they won, 8-1 at No. 1.
Senior Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) and sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) teamed up at No. 2 to beat Ellie Linsell and Brianna Armellino, 8-4.
In singles play, Rios picked up the first win easily against Ansari, 6-3, 6-2, while Yurtkuran dropped her match at No. 2 to Cox, 6-4, 6-2.
Falcon fought in three sets at No. 5 to win 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 against Jessica Thaggard, before Whitehead battled Armellino at No. 3 to clinch the match, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.
Freshman Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain / Tile Hill Wood School) lost in a tough three sets at No. 6 against Celi, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, before Wilkins concluded the match with a close 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory at No. 1 against Linsell.
Furman hold a 9-7 record and are 5-1 in the SoCon after dropping a 4-3 decision at College of Charleston on Wednesday. Saturday's match mars the 19th meeting between Furman and UNCG. The Blue and Gold won last year's meeting, 5-2.
Wofford is coming off of a 4-3 loss to Davidson. The Terriers dropped to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in SoCon play.
