No. 70 Women's Tennis Hosts Appalachian State
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 70 nationally-ranked UNCG women's tennis program continues it's Southern Conference competition when it hosts Appalachian State Tuesday, April 2 at the UNCG tennis courts at 2 p.m.
The Spartans are coming off of a 5-2 victory against Georgia Southern, advancing their season record to 10-5 and 6-1 in the SoCon.
Senior Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador / Liceo Latinoamericano) teamed up with sophomore Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. / Broward Virtual School) at No. 2 to win a close 9-7 match against Natalie Maffett and Stephanie Woods.
Seniors Niltooli Wilkins (Burnsville, Minn. / Homeschooled) and Alex Whitehead (Victoria, Australia / Star of the Sea College) battled Paola Garrido and Mary Phillips Smith at No. 1 and came out on top, 9-7.
In singles play, Falcon picked up an easy win at No. 5 against Maffett, 6-0, 6-2, before Gammie won in a quick two sets, 6-2, 6-2 against Francisca Norregaard at No. 6.
Whitehead clinched the match at No. 3 singles when she beat Woods, 6-4, 7-5.
Wilkins dropped her match at No. 1 to Garrido, 6-1, 7-5, before Yurtkuran fell to Klein at No. 2, 6-4, 6-1.
Rios fought in three sets to win 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 against Smith.
The Mountaineers (11-6, 3-2 SoCon) are coming off a 4-3 loss to league rival Furman University on March 2, dropping only their second Southern conference match this season.
