Annette Rios Named SoCon Women's Tennis Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Women's tennis senior Annette Rios (Santa Ana, El Salvador/Liceo Latinoamericano) has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played April 1-7.
Rios was 6-0 last week in singles and doubles play as the Spartans finished the week 2-1 in league play. After topping Appalachian State 5-2, the Spartans fell to Furman 4-3 before closing the week with a 6-1 decision over Wofford.
Rios was a perfect 3-0 at No. 4 singles for the Spartans. The Santa Ana, El Salvador, native began the week with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Appalachian State's Jennifer Ansari and pulled out a three-set win over Furman's Michele Stanford (5-7, 6-4, 1-0 [10-7]). Rios earned her third singles victory of the week with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Wofford's Mareli Sanchez.
Paired with Kayla Gammie at No. 2 doubles, UNCG's pair went 3-0 as it topped Appalachian State's Ellie Linsell and Brianna Armellino, 8-4. Rios and Gammie then downed Furman's Michele Stanford and Amanda Murray by an 8-4 margin before holding off Wofford's Julia Paulson and Lucy Schermerhorn, 8-7 (9-7). UNCG's No. 2 doubles team has now won five of its last six matches and is 9-6 in doubles play this spring.
UNCG (12-6, 8-2 SoCon) returns to action Wednesday when the Spartans visit East Carolina.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included College of Charleston's Kelly Kambourelis, Elon's Bryn Khoury, Furman's Katherine Oudin, Georgia Southern's Jordana Klein, Chattanooga's Alexa Flynn and Wofford's Julia Paulson.
