UNCG cruises into SoCon semifinals, 4-0 over GSU

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Top-seeded UNCG cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 8 seed Georgia Southern in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship at The Citadel's O. Perry Earle, Jr. Tennis Center on Friday.

UNCG (17-5) picked up the doubles points by getting wins from both of its All-SoCon doubles tandems. Second-teamers Kayla Gammie and Annette Rios picked up an 8-2 win over Allison Beeler and Mimi Bollaci at No. 3, and first-team picks Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty earned an 8-3 win over Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen at No. 1.

The Spartans' Devon Sutherland and Alex Whitehead were leading Natalie Maffett and Alexis Prickett 7-2 at No. 2 when the point was clinched.

Dougherty put UNCG up 2-0 with a quick win at No. 5 singles, demolishing Alessandra Dzuba, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Stephanie Falcon followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maffett at No. 6, and Whitehead clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Beeler at No. 2.

UNCG was leading in two of the three matches that were abandoned when the contest was decided. At No. 3, Dilara Yurtkuran battled back from a 6-4 loss in the first set to grab a 6-2 win over Kitchen in the second. Yurtkuran was leading 1-0 in the third when the match was clinched.

Rios clawed back from a 4-0 deficit to Prickett in the first set at No. 4 to take a 7-5 win. She was leading 2-1 in the second set when the match was abandoned.

Wilkins, the SoCon Player of the Year, saw her 19-match winning streak stay intact despite trailing Garrido 6-7 (3-7), 0-1 at the top flight when the match ended. Wilkins, whose 29 singles wins this season match the school record, will have to wait one more day to try to become the first women's tennis player in school history to reach 30.

The Eagles saw their season come to an end with a 6-15 record.

UNCG will face either fourth-seeded Samford or fifth-seeded Chattanooga in the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. Live stats can be found at UNCGSpartans.com.
